Thoughts on Simple TTRPG Guns

I was talking with someone about a Western RPG that is somewhat based on the Into the Odd family of games1. That got me thinking about how I would Western-ify a simple game like that. Really the core doesn't need to shift, you just need to put on your stetson, pull up your cowboy boots, and start rootin' and tootin'. Though something that I feel separates a western from the other Into the Odd family games I've played is the focus on the gun as the great equalizer. So here are some spitballed ideas I have2.

Six Shooter

The staple of the genre. Every cattle rustler, deputy, or saloon worker needs to at least have access to one of these. They only have six shots and without a speed loader you're going to need to take time to replenish. I figure, why not add dramatic tension to the more shots you take.

Revolver
d6
If you roll your current empty chambers (after the current shot) your die explodes
It keeps exploding until you roll a different number

Shotgun

Maybe this is more an influence of video games than westerns, but why not keep the idea of the up and personal gun. Plus it can come in normal shotgun and sawed-off varieties.

Shotgun

d6
When closed into melee range increase damage to d8+d8

Sawed-Off

d10+d10
This gun is only effective when you are in melee range

You could go on and do more with rifles and other guns, but these were the ideas that jumped out at me.

  1. When you see a die roll plus a die roll it [d8+d8] denotes roll the dice twice and take the better result, similar to advantage in other systems.

  2. These are not meant to simulate any real life firearms, just the feel that comes from a western.
